Mosaic Tiles
Class Overview: Introduction to Glass Mosaic Art
Skill Level: Beginner (no prior art or glass-cutting experience required)
Duration: 3 hours
Why Take This Class?
Unlock a Meditative Craft: Mosaic making is highly therapeutic. Piecing together small tiles requires a focused, rhythmic attention that naturally clears your mind and relieves stress.
Master a Durable, Lifelong Skill: Once you learn the fundamentals of cutting glass and mixing grout, you can apply this technique to endless DIY projects at home—from updating picture frames to designing custom garden stones and tabletops.
Play with Light and Color: Working with stained and iridescent glass allows you to experiment with reflection and texture in a way that paint or drawing simply cannot replicate.
Walk Away with a Finished Masterpiece: You will turn a blank tile backing into a beautiful, personalized, and fully grouted coaster or wall plaque that is ready to display or gift.
What You Will Learn
Design & Layout: How to sketch your concept and map out your tile placement (called andamento) for smooth visual flow.
Glass Cutting Basics: How to safely use wheeled glass nippers to cut and shape stained glass tiles (tesserae) into specific sizes.
Adhesive Application: How to choose and apply the right glue to secure your glass pieces permanently.
The Grouting Process: How to mix, apply, and wipe away colored cement grout to fill the gaps, making your design pop and securing the edges.
Mosaic tile art is an ancient craft that combines precision with vibrant color, using pieces of glass and stone to turn everyday surfaces into stunning, light-catching designs.

Where to Find Us
This class is located in the maker’s space at the back of the Stephanie Hargrave Gallery. There’s no better place to make art than surrounded by art and artists in the heart of Seattle’s Pioneer Square!
Stephanie’s gallery is on the 2nd floor (suite 104) of the Tashiro Kaplan Building, home of 25 art galleries, co-ops, art spaces, and 50 artist live/work lofts. This historic building (built in 1906 and remodeled in 2004), has preserved stucco beams and preserved storefronts, along with large bright windows to light up our workspace.
The area around the gallery has free parking on Sundays.
Sound Transit’s Link Pioneer Square station is just a few blocks away, and Metro Transit’s D line has a stop just around the corner.
