Easy Engraving

Even beginners can learn to create "etching-like" prints quickly and easily using tools and materials you already have at home! Explore drypoint intaglio printmaking using recycled Tetra Pak cartons as an affordable and eco-friendly plate material. We'll practice cross-hatching and incising textures using drypoint tools, corkscrews, dental tools, and exacto knives. Instead of etching ink, we'll use water soluble "Stabilo Woody" colored pencils. After "inking," prepare your plate using Q-tips to increase contrast, and pull prints using rolling pins or hand-burnishing. Emphasis on sustainable practice, mark-making, and experimental approaches to tone, pattern, and layering.

All supplies are provided, and step-by-step guidance will ensure everyone leaves with three finished plates in this two hour class. We'll have enough 300gsm 100% cotton paper for each student to make two prints from each plate in class, and you'll leave knowing how to make more prints at home. Images for tracing will be provided, but feel free to bring your own! Plates will be 2x3 inches and 4x5 inches. Print your images in reverse, especially words, as our prints will be the reverse from what we scratch into the plate.

Policies

  • Please wear clothing that you don’t mind if they get stained. Although we don’t intend for you to leave covered in paint, accidents do sometimes happen!

  • All materials for all classes are included in your class price. Some classes have the ability to incorporate your own materials, sketches, and tools. Where applicable, your instructor can help you learn how to use your own tools.

  • If you cannot attend class for any reason, we will offer an exchange to another class currently on our schedule or class credit up to 48 hours before the class. After that time, no refunds or exchanges are issued out of respect for our teachers who purchase and prepare supplies based on the number of attendees.

  • Doors will open 15 minutes before class begins.

  • We’ll be starting the class promptly, but late arrivals happen and we’ll do what we can to catch you up on what you’ve missed.

  • Please do not attend if for any reason you suspect you might be sick. Please contact the instructor as soon as reasonably possible. At this time, our classes do not have a masking policy, but do feel free to wear a mask and you will be respected for your choice.

  • Children under 16 are welcome only at the approval of the instructor.

  • Where possible, we strive to keep art supplies out of the environment. At Craft Cats we use techniques to clean brushes and brayers to keep acrylic paint out of our groundwater.

Seattle ReCreative is a 501c3 non-profit located on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present, and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.

We collect donations of used materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill from local businesses and individuals to redistribute to our community. Proceeds from the resale of these goods helps fund our arts programming and supply free creative materials and workshops to the community.

We believe that art fuels innovation and collaboration, and endeavor to create a physical space and programmatic approach that reflects this belief.  Our hope is that Seattle ReCreative will function as much more than a model for environmental stewardship. We see the space as a catalyst for social and intellectual enrichment. By bringing together members of our community not only to shop, but also to create, experience, and discuss art, we aim to foster cultural and personal connection amongst artists of all ages.

Our classes and creative playspace provide young children with developmentally appropriate art-making experiences, while also exposing them to adult art practices and appreciation.  Workshops are conducted by artists, educators and environmental activists from both inside and outside our community.

We believe that art has the power to change human consciousness, and that our project will challenge others to think more broadly about interpersonal and global impact.
